Josh Nol an was Eric’s third uncle.
Compared to the rest of the Nolans, who were sharp and business–savvy, Josh preferred to indulge in pleasure and cared little about the family’s affairs.
In other words, Josh just wanted an easy life, freeloading and doing nothing important .
If a guy like him could get arrested, it was clearly a warning aimed at Irene.
Irene had five kids–three boys and two girls.

A faint smile appeared on Alice’s lips as she told the servants to bring in people from the old
mansion.
This time, it wasn’t Henry who arrived, but Shirley Dawson, the woman who took care of Irene’s daily needs.
By family rank, Shirley was actually Daniel’s and Stanley’s grandaunt–so Irene trusted her to
act as a messenger.
“Mr. and Mrs. Nolan, you’ve been gone so long. Mrs. Irene really misses you.”
Alice looked closely at the older woman standing before her.
Shirley looked barely over 50, with a healthy glow that showed she took good care of herself.
Even though she was about Irene’s age, Shirley seemed more like a junior to her.
It was kind of strange for a maid to seem more lively than her employer.

“Mrs. Nolan, Mrs. Irene has worried herself sick over Mr. Nolan all these years. It’s really affected her health…”
Alice was direct. “So that’s why she never came even once?”
Shirley froze.
She’d never met anyone so blunt before.
Taking a deep breath, Shirley swallowed her irritation.
“Mrs. Nolan, Mrs. Irene is your elder. How could you talk about your elders like that? If word got out, people would say you’re disrespectful.”
Alice smiled, but it was a cold, deadly smile.
“Really? I don’t care. I’m from the countryside. I never learned any manners.”
Shirley paused before smiling awkwardly. “Mrs. Nolan, you’re funny.”
“I’m not joking.” Alice’s face suddenly turned icy.
Her grin vanished completely.

Her whole presence became like a freezing blizzard, chilling everything around her.
She took a slow step forward.
At about five foot seven, she towered over Shirley, who was barely five feet tall.
In that instant, the oppressive air of superiority was impossible to ignore.
Even someone like Shirley, who’d seen it all, couldn’t help taking a step back.
