Eric said nothing more and turned to leave.
Ruby stood still, deep in thought.
After a long while, she pulled out her phone.
“Ms. Martinez… Alright, alright, I’ll call you Yvette, then.”
“Are you free tonight? I’d love to buy you a drink.”
“Great. See you this evening.”
The moment she hung up, her smile disappeared completely.
A trace of chill flickered in her eyes.
By the time Alice left work, the sky had already turned dark.
The IT department had to stay late for system maintenance, so her shift ended later than usual.
She checked the time, then searched for nearby venues on her phone before calling Eric.
She thought he’d already eaten dinner by now, but to her surprise, the workaholic was still at the office.
The design department had recently taken on several custom angelic art style projects.
They were quite difficult to work with, so the entire team was focused on nailing down the finer details.
Eric had just finished when her call came through.
“What is it?”
His voice was low and slightly hoarse from hours of talking.
“Weren’t we supposed to go out tonight?”
There was a long pause.
Alice thought maybe she hadn’t sounded sincere enough.
She quickly left the IT department and headed to the design department to wait for him.
Eric had just finished a meeting and was preparing to let his team off for the day.
They stood frozen at the door when they saw Alice.

When he reached the design department, he only saw Eric and Alice inside.
He watched in shock as Alice slowly walked toward Eric.

Daniel’s face fell as he gave a dramatic pout. “Mrs. Nolan, are you abandoning me?”
Alice widened her eyes. “I never took you in the first place.”
“Mrs. Nolan, I think you’ve misunderstood-”
He looked like he was about to cry.
Seeing how pitiful he looked, Alice decided not to tease him any further.
“I didn’t mean anything by it. Mr. Eric and I have a few personal things to take care of. You don’t need to tag along.”
Daniel’s eyes lit up.
“A date?”
Alice thought about it for a second. “It might be.”
Daniel nearly jumped three feet into the air.

He turned and ran off.
Alice watched his flustered retreat and couldn’t help but laugh.
“Mr. Eric, were you always this cruel to your subordinates?”

All afternoon, he’d been thinking about the time Alice and Risa went out for drinks.
Back then, Risa had been surrounded by a group of handsome young men.
All of them were the type that women would swoon over.
They had all gathered around Alice and Risa like bees to honey.
Just remembering it irritated him.
