Chapter 896
Chapter 898
Madeline grinned at Halsey. “I knew it! You’re the best.”
Halsey picked up her bowl. “Let’s eat.”
The meal passed in an awkward, almost tense silence. When it was over, Halsey stood up.
“I’ll do the dishes.”
She hadn’t helped cook, but at least she could handle the cleanup. Since she was staying here, she didn’t want to feel completely useless.
She reached out to grab the utensils, but Shaun caught her slender wrist before she could.
“I’ll do it.”
The sudden contact made Halsey freeze. His hand was warm, with a faint layer of calluses that pressed gently against her smooth skin as he held her wrist.
“You cooked, so let me do the dishes. I want to help out a little,” Halsey insisted.
Shaun looked at her. “Do you even know how to wash dishes?”
After all, Halsey had grown up pampered and probably never touched a sink.
“No,” she admitted, “but I can learn.”
Shaun gave her a faint smirk. “Why learn something like that? If you don’t know how, just don’t do it.”
Halsey’s lashes fluttered.
Shaun gently pulled her wrist away. “You don’t need to do anything. Just keep Maddy company.
Halsey nodded. “Okay.”
Shaun let go of her and gathered the utensils before heading to the kitchen.
Halsey watched him from the doorway. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with black slacks- the classic CEO look, handsome and put-together as ever. His sleeves were rolled up now, revealing his strong forearms. With his head slightly lowered as he washed the dishes, he looked effortlessly elegant, the kind of man who was hard to look away from.
Suddenly, Halsey realized that she might never meet a man like him again.
That was when Madeline appeared behind her. “What are you staring at? Shaun?”

Halsey quickly turned her eyes away. “Now you’re teasing me, too?”
Madeline giggled. “I know Shaun’s good-looking, just like me. So, when am I getting invited to your wedding?”
Halsey froze for a moment. She hadn’t told Madeline about what had happened between her and Shaun. Apparently, Shaun hadn’t either, so Madeline still didn’t know.
Halsey didn’t know how to break the news. So instead, she just said, “You should get some more rest.”
Madeline laughed. “Yes, ma’am. Whatever you say.”
Madeline followed Halsey back to the bedroom, but she came out again shortly after. She walked into the kitchen and looked at Shaun.
“Did
you
and Halsey get into a fight?” she asked him.
Shaun kept his eyes on the dishes. His handsome face was calm, unreadable. “She told you?”
Madeline shook her head. “No. She hasn’t said a single bad thing about you to me. Not once.
Shaun stayed silent.
Madeline continued, “What happened between you two? You guys were doing fine before, and now everything feels off.”
“You’re asking me like I know the answer. If you want to know, ask her,” Shaun said flatly.
Madeline huffed, “It’s obviously your fault!”
Shaun glanced over at Madeline, speechless. Talk about being one-sided.
Madeline stood her ground. “It has to be your fault. You must’ve done something to upset Halsey! And let me tell you, if she breaks up with you, I’m going to ditch you and stick with her instead!”
