Chapter 249
Noah POV
I paced the entrance of the Moon Whisper – every second felt like a thousand years. They should be home by now.
I was beside myself with joy when Lucius had called earlier to inform me that the doctors had finally found a heartbeat. It was a good sign but most importantly, I just wanted to be with my mate. I wanted to hold her close and just enjoy being in her presence.
A watcher I had sent ahead, came back a while later to inform me they were coming and would be with me in the next few minutes. As they approached the pack grounds, I could feel my wolf pacing anxiously, eager to reunite with his mate.
The moment Selene stepped out of the vehicle, unable to stop myself, I rushed at her, enveloping her in a hug.
“My love!” I murmured into her hair, inhaling her scent deeply. Although it felt off but I assumed it was because she hadn’t had a proper bath for days now so I pushed it aside. “You’re safe now,”.
“I missed you!” she murmured reaching for my lips and kissing me, unlike her. Selene wasn’t a big fan of PDAs but I was assuming with everything that had happened, she felt so grateful for life.
I handed her over to the maids and the midwife before turning to Lucius and the Kurtis. “Thank you so much, you two. I am forever in your debt,”.
“It was nothing, Your Majesty,” Kurtis replied a blank expression on his face. I was sensing an angry aura emanating from him. “With your permission, I would like to return to my pack immediately. I noticed the rogues have withdrawn and the city seems safe,”.
“Yes, they have,” I nodded staring from him to Lucius, there was an uncomfortable tension between them. Did they fight? Kurtis and Lucius never saw eye-to-eye in a lot of things. “They left during the time you called me that you had rescued Selene,”.
“That’s a relief,” Lucius nodded “I would like to return to Greyhound immediately. I’m sure Alpha Xavier would be wondering where I had run off to,”.
“I’m sorry I cannot grant it… at least not tonight. I’ve put together a small feast just to show my appreciation. For you and the soldiers that went with you. You’re not permitted to leave without accepting this little token. The feasting begins at 6 pm,” I announced. Without letting them protest, I walked away.
I decided to check on Selene in her room but was surprised when the maids told me she had gone to mine as soon as they were done cleaning her. That was strange. She was supposed to be exhausted from everything.
Deciding not to read too much meaning to it, I decided to check my room. When I got in, I saw her sprawled on the bed, staring at me seductively as she beckoned to me with her index finger.
“Wow!” my eyes widened with shock at the way she was dressed. She had a blue, see-through lingerie and even had makeup on. Selene only had makeup on on special occasions where she had to appear in public with me and she preferred my T-shirts rather than lingerie. She never wore them, at least not for me.
“I figured you must have missed me dearly,” she said softly, batting her eyes seductively “And we missed you too my love. Come here and make love to me!”
“Seriously?” I stared at her in confusion. “Aren’t you tired? Exhausted and all?”
“I had enough rest last night, c’mon!” she beckoned to me.
This didn’t feel right. I cannot take advantage of my woman when she’s burnt out. So, I pretended that a mind link had come in and excused myself from the room, walking as fast as I could before she followed me.
Throughout the day, I noticed she was unusually clingy. She arrived at my office moments later and kept sniffing me, telling me how much she misses me and cannot wait to have my big C**ck inside her – all vulgar words. Selene used to blush when I said common words like ’P**is’ or Breast’. So this was startling for me.
She refused to leave my side the whole day, constantly seeking physical contact. While a part of me was pleased by her affection, another part still felt unsettled. This wasn’t the strong, independent Selene I knew. But given what I had been through, I reasoned, it was natural for her to seek comfort and security.
As night fell, I retired to my room, with Selene still acting strange. I could feel my restraint slipping off, as my arousal became palpable. Unable to stop myself anymore, we had sex. It was hot and steamy and unbelievably good. I didn’t want to compare but this Selene kept asking for more until I was literally exhausted.
Thankfully, she was tired too after what seemed like our ninth round. I watched her carefully, noting how she moved around the room with an almost hesitant familiarity. She kept asking me where things were. Finally, as we prepared to sleep, she pressed herself against me, her body colder than usual.
“Are you feeling alright love?’ I asked.
She nodded, burying her face in my chest. “Just tired,” she murmured “But I’d appreciate a wake-up sex… you know the one when you spoon me from behind and slowly wake me,” she said.
Selene hated me touching her in the morning because the baby used to be the most active during the morning period. Once I had attempted a back hug and got warned and threatened to run away from the pack.
As we lay in the darkness, my unease grew. Something was off, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. My wolf – Hud usually calmed by Selene’s presence, remained agitated. This woman in bed with me wasn’t my wife.
Unable to shake the feeling, I gently disentangled myself from Selene’s arms and turned on the bedside lamp. In the soft glow, I studied her sleeping form. Her features were exactly as I remembered but something was missing. Selene never lies on her right side. It was either on the left or on her back. That was the only way to get the baby inside her to rest.
With growing dread, I carefully brushed aside her hair, searching for my mark on her neck.

My heart pounding, I searched on the other side of her neck, even her scalp, hoping it had magically disappeared there but there was nothing. I reached for the dagger; I kept hidden in the bedside table.
With a swift, decisive movement, I plunged the blade into the chest of the woman lying beside me.
