“Why not?” Aubrey’s voice was cold, her gaze unreadable.

That expression made Bailey’s stomach knot with unease. She couldn’t explain it–Aubrey was only an omega, while she was a beta werewolf, yet being under Aubrey’s eyes felt like having something razor–sharp scrape across her skin, leaving a sting in its wake.
Even her wolf, Sasha, muttered uneasily in her mind, “ Strange … sometimes she doesn’t feel like a wolfless omega at all, but more like she’s radiating alpha pressure …”
Bailey’s eyelid twitched. Aubrey’s mother had been an alpha–level werewolf. And ever since they’d fallen out, Aubrey hadn’t been taking her wolf suppressants.
Panicked, Bailey tried sensing Aubrey’s level–then relaxed when she found only the familiar, lowly omega aura. As expected, after so many suppressants, it would take years for her to recover.
Still, the situation irritated her. She only had to impress Professor Rowan today, and she would be formally accepted as his disciple–personally trained, given access to advanced, exclusive medical knowledge.
And now Aubrey had to appear, insisting on following her here…

When Aubrey and Bailey finally arrived at Professor Rowan’s office, the professor’s gaze went first to Aubrey.
He recognized her immediately–the school’s star prodigy–and smiled. “Did you need something from me?”
Before Aubrey could speak, Bailey cut in quickly. “Professor Rowan, I’m here! You were looking for me, right?”
Rowan’s attention shifted. “Yes. I wanted to ask about your research project.” He genuinely admired the work he believed she’d done, thinking the girl had real potential in the medical field. With the right guidance, she could become a renowned potion master.
Bailey flicked a glance at Aubrey before continuing, “Professor, Aubrey’s my sister. I know I should avoid being petty, but… our family has a tradition of friendly competition. I don’t want my sister to see my work- it might make her jealous.”
She even pouted, playing the part of someone protectively guarding her techniques.
It wasn’t an unreasonable sentiment.
Professor Rowan hesitated. Aubrey was a known genius, and if the sisters truly didn’t get along, it wouldn’t be wise to risk showing his future student’s work to her.

Then a woman’s voice cut laughing, but sharpened with mockery.
“My, Aubrey, Bailey’s parents are still alive. No need for you to step in just yet.”
Aurelia had arrived, with Jax in tow. His face was drawn and unpleasant, but for reasons unclear, he’d let her drag him to the school.
Aubrey’s eyes narrowed, ice flashing in their depths. “Dad, what are you doing here?”
Jax avoided her gaze, looking guilty.
Bailey, relieved, rushed to Aurelia’s side and clung to her hand. “Mom!”
Then she hesitated before looking at Jax. “Dad…”
He only grunted, not meeting her eyes, before turning to Aubrey with a conflicted expression. “Aubrey, go back to class for now. I’ll handle this.”
