He squatted down, lifted the cat into his arms, and with a hint of triumph in his gaze, said to Darren, “This is a cat Belinda and I raised together.”’ Darren scoffed. “Cats don’t know any better. If it understood what you’ve done to Belinda, it wouldn’t be fond of you.”’ “As for what happened between Belinda and me, that’s none of your concern.”’ With a dismissive snort, Kristopher craned his neck, trying to see past Darren. “Belinda, come out here.”’ He was still officially married to her, yet here she was, having fled their home to rent this apartment and allowing another man to stay the night? Since the cat was raised by both of you, she’s decided she no longer wants it! If you like it that much, you might as well take it with you!”’ With that, Darren walked briskly toward the elevator, black bag in hand. “Mr. Cox, I’m leaving. Are you going to keep standing at your ex-wife’s door, pretending to care?”’ Frustrated, Kristopher raised his hand and knocked on Belinda’s door once more. But there was only silence. Darren said impatiently, “She’s not well. She hasn’t been resting properly for quite some time. If you really need to see her, can it not wait until tomorrow?”’ This was the first time Kristopher had been scolded by someone like Darren, whom he considered beneath him. Normally, Kristopher would not tolerate such insolence. However, hearing that Belinda was unwell and unrested, he was suddenly concerned. He lowered his gaze and refrained from knocking again. Frowning, he turned and walked into the elevator with Fluffy in his arms, saying indifferently, “I’ll leave her be, and you should too.”’ Darren shot him a look and retorted sarcastically, “Do you think I’m as shameless as you?”’ The two men shared the elevator ride down to the ground floor. Exiting the apartment building, they each headed to their respective cars. Just as Darren entered his car, his phone rang. It was Marlene from Peace Hospital on the line. “I asked you to look for Belinda’s medication log. Have you found it? She always keeps detailed records of her medications!”’ “Yes, I’ve got it. I was held up by something earlier. I’m on my way now!”’ With that, he took a deep breath, started the car, and drove off toward Peace Hospital. Watching the direction of Darren’s departing car, Kristopher gently stroked the head of the cat in his arms. “Let’s go. Dad will take you home.”’ As if understanding his words, Fluffy rubbed against his chest and meowed softly. Kristopher sighed as he looked at Fluffy’s endearing face. Suddenly, he was reminded of how Belinda used to cuddle against him in a similar way. She had always resembled the cat now in his arms. With this thought, he instinctively looked up at the darkened windows of Belinda’s apartment. In their divorce agreement, Belinda had insisted on taking Fluffy with her.
