Selene POV
I felt a cold dread settle in my stomach as the reality of the entire situation became painfully clear. Jared didn’t just need me – he intended to use me, to force me to unlock the power that had been hidden away for so long.
The thought of it, the unimaginable destruction that could be unleashed if Jared succeeded, filled me with a deep gnawing fear.
The mythical world will suffer – centuries of tragedy will be repeated.
“Back then, when our world was still untainted… everyone revered the witches and the wizards. They were the ones who were healers, they were the matchmakers… we were everything. Everyone looked up to us, needed us but now, we’ve been reduced to nothing more than weaklings scattered all over the earth without a base… it’s time to bring us back and restore that which was lost,”.
“You’re not even a wizard, Why are you doing this?” I asked. “Why go to such lengths for power? There are other ways to get things done, Jared… plenty of ways and not this. People will die… people will lose their homes if you launch into this stupid scheme of yours. Have you no conscience or pity?”
His eyes flashed with anger as he gave me a painful gaze, his presence loomed over me like a shadow. “Because I’ve spent my entire life fighting for every scrap of power I have,” he growled, his voice laced with bitterness. “I was born a hybrid – part witch, part werewolf but I was never enough of either to be truly powerful. I had to cultivate my strength, claw my way to the top, fight for everything I have today…while others like you were simply born with it,”.
He paused, his gaze burning into mine as if he could see the very core of my soul. “I despise the moon goddess and I know you do too, Selene. At least, we share similar sentiments regarding the way she runs our world,”.
“What are you talking about?” I asked quietly.
“She has so much power, but she doesn’t use it. She lets our world fall into chaos, while she watches from her celestial throne. She allowed my father – a beast with power, with strength to defeat my mother every night until he got her pregnant with me. She allowed me to suffer all those years in the hands of my step-siblings. I would go nights without food… days even. No one liked or cared for me… I’ve been through enough hardship… hardships that could have broken me.. but what did she do? Nothing… sits there and allows our world to do as they please,” he trailed off.
“The powerful eats the weak here… Lycans against Alphas, Werewolves against Werefoxes, Werewolves against Witches, Werewolves against Fairy, Werewolves against Vampires… ” he chuckled “That’s an insane amount of power for one group of people. Why do we need to let them rule us when they’re not the most powerful. All they have is strength and nothing more,”.
“There are better ways to share this power, Jared, Better ways than what you’re doing now, believe me,”.
“How about you, Selene?” he huffed “You stayed loyal to one man for 7 years while he deserted your matrimonial bed because of some curse. You healed him all those years and what did you get in return? No one regarded you in the pack, his mother killed your parents. You think things have changed with Noah… but let something happen to him and you’d be surprised how much you’ll be abandoned. You have power Selene, more than you realize and now, you’re going to help me take what’s mine,”.

My heart pounded in my chest as I stared at him. “And you want me to lead you to that power?”
Jared nodded; his expression deadly serious. “Yes, with that power, we can end this war, Selene. We can bring the werewolves to their knees, avenge Gaia’s death and finally restore the balance that was lost long ago. But I can’t do it without you,”.
My mind raced as I considered everything he had said. At least, I knew he wasn’t going to kill me but I feared he might try to cast a spell on me and use me for his selfish ends. I could feel the pull of the power within me, the ancient magic that had been passed down through my bloodline.
The moon priestess that had nurtured me after the plane crash had given me a snippet of everything, I would face… and had given me caution. ’With great power comes great responsibility and the wrong choice could lead to destruction’.
As I looked into Jared’s eyes, I saw the ambition, the anger and the desperation that had driven him to this point. He was willing to do whatever it took to seize that power, even if it meant destroying everything in his path.
My loved ones will suffer and die…I wasn’t going to be a tool to be used in someone else’s quest for power. I was the last descendant of Gaia, the only one who could wield the power of the First Alpha and the First Witch. And I would not let that power be used for destruction.
“Have you ever considered the casualties that would suffer should you start this war?” I asked quietly. “You think everyone will sit still and let you try to take power. Do you think Lycan and Alphas will just stay put and let you change the order of things? That’s not going to happen, Jared. It’s going to be a blood bath and it’s not something I would wish on my worst enemies.
“There’s no victory without blood, Selene. People would have to sacrifice for the greater good,”.
“Fine!” I said slowly “I’ll help you find the power but I won’t let you use it to destroy the world. If I have to fight you to stop you, then I will,”.
An amused smile crossed his features. “We’ll see about that, Selene. But for now, we need each other. And together, we will find that power,”.
