Aubrey’s POV
That night, alpha Mateo called to tell me that Caesar had taken a group of people to that plot of land to dig for “treasure.” Officially, he claimed they were cleaning up the toxic waste.
I couldn’t help but laugh when I heard that. Go ahead and dig. Dig all you want. All they were going to find was the Lynn family’s bankruptcy. Once Aurelia lost the financial support of the Lynn family, she’d have no choice but to go crawling to that mysterious man.
“I got it,” I said, narrowing my eyes. “I’ll be at your place tomorrow at ten to treat your brother.”
Before alpha Mateo could say anything, I hung up.
But the next morning, I woke up to find Ella had vanished again. Dammit. Damned wolf suppressants–how much longer were they going to torment me? And today of all days, when I had to go to Mateo’s place, which wasn’t exactly known for being safe. Without Ella, I’d lost my strongest defense.
Damn it. Maybe I should hit up the werewolf black market sometime and pick up a couple of handguns and silver bullets just in case.
Grumbling, I got out of bed and went through the three training sets Grandpa had taught me. After a shower, I headed downstairs.
And the moment I stepped outside, I closed my eyes in exasperation.

One second later, I made my decision–I’d pretend I hadn’t seen him and head the other way to flag a cab.
I made my disinterest crystal clear. With an alpha’s pride, he probably wouldn’t come over, right?
Wrong.
He didn’t even hesitate. He walked straight over.
“Still mad about yesterday?” alpha Henry asked, keeping his voice low. He reached for my hand, but I quickly dodged him, face expressionless. “No.”
“If you’re not mad, then get in my car. Where are you going?” he asked, undeterred.
“I’ll take a cab.”
“With me standing here, what idiot of a werewolf would dare pick you up?” alpha Henry said coolly. And he wasn’t wrong–no werewolf would cross an alpha’s command if he made his stance clear.
I gritted my teeth and got in his car.
Alpha Henry grinned like he’d just scored a win. The light in his eyes was as blinding as starlight.
He opened the mini–fridge in the car and pulled out a bottle of milk, handing it to me. “Breakfast.”
I gave it a glance. “I don’t drink that.”

I turned away, annoyed, and didn’t speak again.
And then, out of nowhere, alpha Henry laughed.
I glanced over at him, confused. He looked… pleased? What the hell?
Then he grinned at me and said, “You’re jealous!”
He said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
